LFC Feature: Nearly But Not Quite…

Posted by Emmo on May 27, 2009

The seasons over and it was nearly our year wasn’t it?

I don’t think that Utd won the title this season I think that Liverpool lost it.
People point to the fact that we were 8 points (maybe more) clear at one time but the truth is we were never that many points ahead as Utd had the games in hand. Only when a team has played the same as you can you claim to however many points clear.

Did the Rafa rant cost us? I don’t think so. The facts are that despite us not losing at home this season (2 home league defeats in 3 seasons) our home form cost us. Silly draws against Stoke, West Ham, Fulham & Hull have given the title to Utd. Turn 2 of those draws into wins and we would be champions.

Our performances against the other 3 in the “big 4” league was impressive. 14 points gained and only 4 dropped – all against Arsenal. How did Utd fare in the mini league? 5 points. Everyone said that Liverpool would never win the league unless their performances against the big 3 improved. We did improve and but they don’t mean anything if we don’t go and beat the likes of Stoke & Hull a week later.

We have outscored the other teams for the second season running and this has been achieved largely without the best forward in the world. I truly believe that if Fernando Torres was fit all season he would have scored 25+ goals and we would be champions. Torres missed the 4 draws at home with the above teams. If playing you would imagine he would have nicked a goal in at least 2 of those games. Sure that’s speculative but this guy has hit 50 goals- with no penalties or free kicks -  quicker than Rush, Owen, Fowler and most of our goal scoring heroes from the past. The man when fit is unstoppable. I don’t think Torres has ever been truly 100% fit this season and yet he still managed 14 league goals in 24 (roughly) games.

People say that you can’t rely on Torres being fit all season and they are right. How can one man make that much of a difference? But Look at Utd. When the season started Utd were 3rd bottom after the 4 games that Ronaldo missed due to an operation. After that comeback he hasn’t missed a single league game. Since then Utd have slowly been on the rise to the top of the table. Although he hasn’t been as effective as last season take him out of that Utd team and they are a different team. A far less potent team.

Over the course of a season every team has a bit of luck. Utd have it in bucket loads. This season they have scored with 7 deflected goals while Liverpool have hit the woodwork 29 times. Fine lines and margins!
86 points were won and in the last 7 seasons that would be enough to claim the title. Utd got 90 points and that only 1 less that their greatest ever points tally.  So where do we need to improve?

There will be the usual comings and goings at Anfield this summer. I truly believe we only need 3 players.
Those players are David Silva, Carlos Tevez and Glenn Johnson.

We need a left winger with Babel being told he can leave and Riera fading badly towards the end of the season Silva will be a welcome addition. Tevez is needed to take the scoring burden of Torres and Johnson is the best right back in the country. His overlapping is excellent and so to his delivery.

Who will go as well as Babel? Dossena, Lucas, Voronin, Istandje and maybe Riera could all be shown the door. I honestly can’t see us selling Alonso. I also hope we don’t buy Gareth Barry who is not LFC class.

The transfer window opens in 3 days and the silly season has already begun with us being linked to nearly every player under the sun.

I like to finish this season with a special mention to Sami Hyppia who if one Premiership player deserved a league winners medal it was him. An excellent player who read the game expertly. I hope Agger and Skrtl have learned a lot from the great Fin – they could do with watching a few of his best games on DVD.
Sami took the handing of the captaincy over to Gerrard with the dignity of a great man as he knew it was best for LFC. Hyypia recently posted a piece on the official site saying it was an honour and privilege to play for LFC for 10 years. Sammi, the honour was all ours.  YNWA Sammi.

Music Feature: Super groups – what would your line up be?

Posted by Emmo on May 27, 2009

Let’s get one thing clear : I don’t like super groups. In my opinion they don’t work. They were great in their previous bands but the magic isn’t there in the new band.

I’ll give you an example of 2 day modern super groups in Velvet Revolver and Chickenfoot.

I didn’t like Velvet Revolver and having heard a few tracks from Chickenfoot I not blown away by them either.
Super groups are normally born out of (good) bands splitting up.  In VR you had 3 members from the old Guns N Roses and 1 from (the then) defunct Stone Temple Pilots.
The debut album sold loads and although I bought it I never liked it with the exception of 3 songs. I didn’t bother with the second album.

Chickenfoot are a bit different in that 2 are ex-members of Van Halen, 1 is currently still in a band (Chad smith) and Joe Satriani has always been a solo artist. I’m not a massive fan of Van Halen or the Chili Peppers so I didn’t expect miracles. Maybe the problem with super groups is that we expect too much. We want them to sound like their old bands but they don’t?

If I could put a super group together then this would be it. Below I give you the members and why they are in the band.

Vocals: Sebastian Bach (Ex Skid Row) – The best ever voice in Rock walks into this band unchallenged. Since recording Skid Rows debut album at 17 in 1989 Bach has been the best in the business. Bach is comfortable with any song thrown at him. His voice is perfect for the rockers and the token ballad on this album.

Bass: Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue) – He probably isn’t the best bassist in the world but Sixx has wrote nearly every single Motley Crue song. His stage presence is a big factor. With his 6 foot plus frame, big hair and tattoos Sixx is a rock god and a must for every super group.

Drums: Lars Ulrich (Metallica) – The man behind the frantic drumming of Metallica for the past 25 years. Ulrich can provide to whatever the song requires. Will he have his moving drum kit on tour? Of course!

Lead Guitar: Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) – This super group needs a finger shredder and here in Bettencourt they have one of the world’s finest. Powerful riffs and finger numbing solos are what this band would need and Bettencourt will provide all that by the truck load.

Rhythm Guitar: Izzy Stradlin (Ex Guns N’ Roses) – Izzy will have a calming influence on the band as the others love the limelight and are hyperactive. Izzys laid back approach to guitar playing and song writing will be the perfect foil for Bettencourt’s playing and Sixx’s lyrics. Izzy will be the unsung hero of this band just like he was in his GNR days.

So there’s my dream super group. Due to the egos they wouldn’t last a week but I’d love to see what they would come up with.

Think you can do better? What’s your best super group line up? There’s only 2 rules. They have to be alive (how would they tour otherwise?) and only one member from any one band.

Album Review: Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown

Posted by Emmo on May 21, 2009

gd

Well how do you follow a mega selling album like American Idiot? You release 21st Century Breakdown that’s how.
If you thought that American Idiot was big, overblown and that Green Day had reached a peak from which down was the only way then you were wrong. 21st Century Breakdown is bigger, louder and might be even better than American Idiot.

5 years in the making Green Day have again gone for the concept album which served them well with AI.
21CB is again based on 2 characters called Gloria and Christian. The album follows them on their journey in 21st century America following the mess that George W Bush left behind.

The album is broke down into 3 sections, Heroes & Cons, Charlatans & Saints the third being Horseshoes & Hand grenades and conatains 18 songs that have a running time of just under 70 minutes.

Green Day have made this concept album in a way that you can listen to any song and like it for what it is. You don’t have to listen to the whole album all the time.

Song highlights include 21 Guns, East Jesus Nowhere, The Static Age, American Eulogy and the single Know Your Enemy.

Expect Green Day to become the worlds biggest band again very soon.

Tracklisting:

Song of the Century

Act I: Heroes and Cons

21st Century Breakdown

Music Feature: Gingers Discography

Posted by Emmo on May 15, 2009

For those who like The Wildhearts you may or may not know that front man Ginger has released some solo albums.
His  first album was only available on Japanese Import back in 2000 and went with the name Silver ginger 5.
A few years later it was released in the UK and had an added bonus disc that contained demos, live & acoustic songs. A second SG5 album was due to be released but nothing ever came of it.

The next solo album was A Break In The Weather and this contained all his singles on one album. Ginger announced he would be releasing a single a month for the 12 months of 2001. After 6 months and 6 singles they stopped coming. He had problems with the label and distributors so no more were released. The  label then released all the already released songs on the one album. In my opinion this is Gingers weakest work. There are some good songs but no great songs.

The next albums released were Valor Del Corazon (2 disc), Yoni and Market Harbour.  All are great albums and sound different from the Wildhearts. Some songs have that Wildhearts sound but most sound different and that’s why I like them so much. No point in releasing solo stuff if it sounds the same as your band is there??
These 3 albums are immense albums. If you don’t have them you really should be ordering them as soon as you have finished here!

Ginger has also released 4  live acoustic albums. Grievous Acoustic Behaviour , Potatoes & You (Only available to buy at Gingers shows), Life Begins At 40 (Mail order only) &The Great White Monkey show how versatile Ginger is. The on stage banter is hilarious and every so often a strange song is played like Prince Charming, Eastenders theme & Spike Milligan for example.

There is another Ginger solo album rumoured to be released in Jan 2010 so you have plenty of time to get his back catalogue and listen to the genius that is Ginger.

Music Feature: The Wildhearts Discography

Posted by Emmo on May 14, 2009

As you know one of my favourite bands is The Wildhearts.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with their work I have added their entire catalogue to the site.
Anybody who wants to start collecting good luck in trying to track the early ones down and be warned it will be an expense journey.
You will notice that a few of the albums are greatest hits or versions of the Greatest hits. To my knowledge the Wildhearts have never officially released “their” best of album.
The compilations have mostly been released because they owed the label one more album so a GH was released or in East Wests case they wanted rid of the band so released albums just to conclude the contract.
“Coupled with” was released without their permission by the then label and you will notice that all the songs on that album are the B-Sides of the singles taken from the “The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed” era. If you bought the singles (many formats) then you wouldn’t need the album

Also you will see there are 3 versions of “Fishing For Luckies”  The first was released via fan club only after they lost their record deal and the other versions were released with added tracks. Fishing For More Luckies was a label rip off but the revamped Fishing For Luckies which included the singles Sick Of Drugs & Red Light-Green Light was a good version to have.

I may be wrong but I don’t think “Geordie In Wonderland, Archaic Airwaves and Landmines And Pantomimes are official band releases. In the case of Archaic Airwaves this was released by the BBC!

There’s a new album already recorded and will be released around August 09
