LFC Feature: All looking good for Liverpool FC in 2009…

Posted by Emmo on December 23, 2008

The Christmas period sees Liverpool entertain Bolton at Anfield on Boxing Day and that’s quickly followed by an away fixture to Newcastle United on Sunday 28th.
If this is really going to be Liverpool’s season they need to take 6 points from the 6 available. A succession of draws have seen Liverpool drop points but somehow they haven’t been punished by Chelsea who don’t seem to want the points either..
In fact the only team to benefit from the top two’s inability to win football matches has been Manchester United who have 2 games in hand after their trip to the far east.
If Utd win both games they will only be a point behind and still have Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal to play at home. They will hope that they do better in the home fixtures because from the 3 away games Utd only picked up 1 point from 9.

I may be biased but I think Liverpool have done brilliantly to be at top come Christmas. Let’s not forget that they are also comfortably into the last 16 of the Champions League where they have a dream tie against Real Madrid. This has all been done without the best forward in the world Fernando Torres who has only played a handful of games due to his hamstring injuries. After his 33 goals last season and match winner in Euro 2008 the lethal front man has twice seen his hamstring ping and has missed at least 75% of Liverpool’s games this season. He may have missed a few games but still has 5 goals to his name. That is the type of quality that Liverpool have been missing yet, as said before, are still top of the Premier League. When Torres announces he is fit again which should be anytime soon, it will be like a new sixty million pound signing arriving at the club. His presence will lift everyone and he has had half a seasons rest so he should be fresh and fit for the final push. His injury now will benefit Liverpool come March.

A lot of Liverpool fans will also tell you that we are still not playing to our best at the moment which is fantastic news considering we have beaten Utd, Chelsea and got a point against Arsenal. Liverpool have claimed 4 points from 2 of the 3 hard away fixtures at Stamford Bridge and The Emirates and Id take a draw at Old Trafford right now. Another great statistic is that Liverpool are always much stronger after Christmas. The last few years have seen Liverpool go on 10 and 12 game winning streaks after the new year so all bodes well for this season.

It not as easy as all that though. In previous seasons Liverpool have mainly been out of the title race come November and with only the Champions League to play for have had no pressure of a title run in. Will the Reds be able to cope with both competitions as Utd and Chelsea have had to in the past? There is no reason why Liverpool can’t do the League and Euro Cup double like Utd last year. They have the squad and the quality.

The transfer window also opens in just over a week and it will be interesting to see who is in and who is out.
Robbie Keane will be going nowhere and all talk of him leaving is nonsense. I think Liverpool would like to get rid of Jermaine Pennant but this will be hard with him being a free agent in the summer. I never wanted him at LFC and I know thousands of fans felt the same. He has had his chances but has never taken them and was never going to be Liverpool class.

I have heard murmurs of the possible sales of Lucas and Dossena, who has had a terrible time since his £6 million from Udinese in the summer but I think they will be here until the end of the season at the very least. Lucas is OK but he is nothing special and not worth £8 million. There also been some gossip about the sale of Agger and Babel to Juventus for £20 million. There’s no doubt that all clubs will be interested if we were selling them but we are not. I expect Agger to get a new contract soon. Babel needs to up his game.

I don’t know any players that may be turning up but as its January the “Michael Owen back to Liverpool” whisper is back out. Owen may have said he will give Newcastle his decision in the summer but if Liverpool bid anything from £5 million upwards then Newcastle will have to listen for a player who can walk for nothing in June. Whether Benitez wants him back after Owen walked out on him just weeks into his new job we don’t know. But if Liverpool had Owen in the team then half our draws this season would have been wins, I have no doubts about that. Benitez is stubborn but if there is someone as good as Owen going on the cheap he must be interested.

Other player names touted about are Heskey and Barry. I personally wouldn’t want either. Barry is too expensive and not as half as good as Alonso and if we were to sign Heskey we would all be moaning about his lack of goals come March. It’s no coincidence that Heskey is playing well now that his contract is up for renewal. He is after one final big pay day and good luck to him. I just hope its not Liverpool he arrives at.

In my opinion we need a right winger. Kuyt puts in a good shift but has no pace. Kuyt is a forward and when he has played up front this season he has scored goals. For me it’s a case of either play him up front or don’t play him and get a winger in. Babel could be that right winger but this season has been a major disappointment when picked. There is no doubt this guy could be world class but an ankle injury at the start of the season and the fact that the gaffer doesn’t rotate as much this season has seen him on the bench. Good player to bring on but should be starting more games. Benitez like Valencia of Wigan but if Utd were to join us in a bidding war for him we will lose out.

So 2009 should be a good year for Liverpool. Benitez should sign his contract any time soon and the signs are that Torres & Gerrard want to extend their stay even though they already have long deals. It would be perfect if all this happened as well as lifting the Premier League crown. Now if we could just get those damn Yankees out !!!

See you in 09.

Music Feature: Slash comments on the Guns N’ Roses album

Posted by Emmo on December 11, 2008

Slash has commented on the new Guns N’ Roses album.

The Guitarist was speaking from his LA home just after the Classic Rock Awards earlier this month said when asked if he had heard it “I have heard a few tracks but not the whole album. One thing I will say is that it is one of those things where you hear his voice – especially on record after not hearing it for a long while – he is one of the all-time great rock vocalists. I gotta give him that. I hope it does well”

Slash left Guns N’ Roses in 1999

Music Feature: Top Ten Albums Of 2008

Posted by Emmo on December 10, 2008

2008 has been one of the strongest years for new Rock/Metal albums in recent times. Here is my 2008 top 10 Rock albums of the year in reverse order.

10) Thunder: BANG! Thunder still rock after all these years. The trouble they have is that they are a victim of 2 things. The first is that they are constantly living in the shadow of their first album Backstreet Symphony and the second is that they get no radio play at all while other not as good bands (you know who you are!!) seem to get it all.
Music needs Thunder and BANG! their latest studio album is an excellent example why. They possess one of the best voices in music in the form of Danny Bowles and they are still an excellent live band.

9 ) The Quireboys: Heartbreakers & home wreckers – The UKs Quireboys have been around for what seems like forever. This album is the best since the debut album A Bit Of What You Fancy released way back in 1990. Spike and Co have put together an excellent package of new songs and they all keep in tradition with the Quireboys unique sound of bluesy orientated Rock N’ Roll. This band remind me of the Rod Stewart & the Faces and that’s not a bad thing.

8 ) The Wildhearts: Stop Us If You Have Heard This Before – A cover album of some of the songs that have influenced the band over the years. All members take a turn of the vocals with some decent results. Nothing amazing but a fun album. The trouble is that the songs Ginger writes are a lot better than these songs. Expect a new album from Newcastle’s finest next year.

7 ) Slipknot:  All Hope Is Gone – The boys from IOWA bounced back to release a beast of an album. Many thought that this album could be a bit of a duffer as singer Corey Taylors side project Stonesour has done so well. Many were wrong! This album is as heavy as a JCB with Bella Emberg sitting on it but also shows the bands lighter side with some toned down tracks. Slipknot also proved how big they are in the UK with 3 sold out shows at Hammersmith Apollo at the beginning of this month.

6 ) Avenged Sevenfold: Diamonds In The Rough – This album compromises of 11 songs. There are 2 covers (Pantera & Iron Maiden), 2 newer versions of older songs and 7 songs that the band decided not to put on their self titled album which was released in 2007. These 7 songs are possibly the strongest they have ever wrote so how the hell did they not make the last album? If finger shredding guitar solos and huge riffs are your thing then this album is a must. Also comes with a bonus DVD of a live show which is filmed in HD.

5 ) Motley Crue: S.O.L.A – LA’s sleaziest were back in 2008 with a cracking album. Their best since 1989s Dr Feelgood. Based on their top selling book soon to be made into a film, The Dirt, S.O.L.A leaves no stone or story uncovered. This album put the Crue back in everyone’s faces after a disappointing last few albums. Guitarist Mick Mars is the unsung hero on this album as his guitar playing on S.O.L.A has gone to another level that’s out of this planet.

4 ) AC/DC: Black Ice – This was only the legendry rockers 3rd album in 18 years so the pressure was on. Could AC/DC deliver? You bet they could. OK, so they have been cooking the same album for the last 30 years but if it tastes this good why change the recipe? This album went straight to No 1 keeping Keane and Razorlight of the top of the charts. Their UK tour next year sold out within minutes of going on sale last month. AC/DC are back now crank it up.

3 ) Metallica: Death Magnetic – The metal world held its breath as the heat was on the San Francisco metal gods to deliver a thunderous album after the disappointment of 2003s St Anger. DM is filled with old style Metallica songs. The solos are back and so too is the energy of the band after a decade of mediocre releases by their standards. If you loved old style Metallica then this is the album you have been praying for. Play loud !

2 ) Ginger: Market Harbour –  What can you say about Ginger (Wildhearts singer/songwriter) that hasn’t already been said? This album is a masterpiece. 21 songs of shear perfection. This guy is up there with Lennon, Plant & Jagger as one of the best songwriters of all time. MH is recorded at a slightly lower volume but this just enhances the brilliance of the songs. If you don’t have this in your music library then you don’t have a very good record collection. Go buy !

1 ) Guns N’ Roses: Chinese Democracy – Was there going to be any other number 1? Was it worth the 17 year wait? Of course. This album is a massive rock album on all levels. Overblown, egotistical & ball dropping all at the same time have helped W Axl Rose take GNR to a level that no one thought existed. The 14 songs are wrote with heart , passion and are littered with amazing finger burning guitar solos. After a few listens it all falls into place. Album of the year doesn’t do it justice but album of the decade should just about cover it.

Feature: What has Stan Collymore got against LFC?

Posted by Emmo on December 9, 2008

Just what has former LFC striker Stan Collymore got against Liverpool Football Club? This weekend and in previous weeks gone by the ex-striker hasn’t had a good word to say against his former employees even though they are sitting at the top of the Premier League.

LFC made Collymore the most expensive signing in British footballing history when they beat Man Utd to his signature and paid Nottingham Forest a cool £8.5 million for his services in 1995. Collymore had the dream start to life at Anfield when on his home debut he scored the winner against Sheffield Wednesday in the opening match of the 95/96 season.

Collymore formed an excellent partnership with fellow forward Robbie Fowler and between them they scored 55 odd goals helping Liverpool finish 3rd in the Premiership, their highest finish since winning the old division one title in 1991. LFC also got through to the 1996 FA Cup final but lost to eventual double winners Man Utd.

After 2 seasons and 28 goals in 63 games, loss of form and a bad attitude forced LFC to sell Collymore to Aston Villa for £7m. It was a dream move for Collymore who had supported Villa since a boy. The dream turned to a nightmare as Collymore couldn’t hold down a first team place and scored a poor 15 goals (2 against LFC in a 2-1 win) in 3 seasons.

In 1998 his Villa career came to end when watching a World Cup match, Collymore punched his then girlfriend Ulrika Johnson in the face. After unsuccessful attempts to rescue his flagging career at Leicester, Fulham (loan), Bradford and Real Oviedo he retired at the age of 30. Collymore again hit the news for the wrong reasons a few years ago when he was caught in the sexual act of Dogging.

Now a commentator for Talksport Collymore uses his air time to slag of his former club. Whilst commentating on LFCs 3-1 over Blackburn this weekend Collymore stunned LFC fans by saying that Liverpool won’t win the league title and by his reckoning they will finish 9th? He went on to add that Liverpool do not deserve their title of European champions in 2005 by claiming they got lucky in the final against AC Milan.

Then when asked about how good Jamie Carragher has been for Liverpool FC, Collymore replied “Who is Jamie Carragher? I’ve never heard of him” and then finished by saying that JC was not world class and that he (Collymore) could real of a list of current defenders better than Carragher.

Finally he asked “What has Carragher ever won?”
2 FA Cups, 2 Worthington Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 Champions League, 2 Super Cups and a couple Charity Shields winners medals a good enough list? Basically Carragher, like Gerrard, has won every club honour you can apart from the Premier League title.

His rant over Carragher is because in Carraghers book he claims that Collymore thought he was bigger than LFC and was a waste of talent. The truth hurts Collymore.

Another reason that Collymore could have an issue with reds is that he claims that LFC tried to make him a player he didn’t want to be. They tried to get him playing more as a team player but Collymore thought he should be able to play however he wanted.

Jamie Carragher is legend already for LFC something that Collymore will never be. Collymore no doubt had talent but chose not to use it to his full potential. Carragher hasn’t got half the talent that Collymore had but has proved with hard work and the desire to get better in every game you can achieve your goals. Collymore is on Talksport most nights spouting his rubbish to the nation. Next time he blasts LFC I urge you all to bombard the station with phone calls and texts putting this waste of time in his place.
